Well, a lot of people are getting/using vonage, now that they figured out that its NOT illegal (at-least for the students of AUA)… But here are a few things that you need to know before you think about vonage and the island of Antigua…
1. You need a wall jack, WITH live internet coming through it (cause there are certain student housing that have FAKE jacks).
2. You need ACT internet access or even better Cable and Wireless (side note: i would go with C&W just cause its faster and more reliable)
3. You need to get Vonage before you leave the states, and if you want two months for free use my number as a reference 847-874-7744
4.Get your devices before you leave the states: what devices are right for you?
- Just want vonage phone service = get the new gadget they have called V-Portal phone Adaptor (if you get this you will need to get a separate wireless router to have a wireless connection in your home)
- Want the service and wireless network = get the Motorola VT24542 (this is what they offer at the vonage home page)
note: dont be all jazzy and buy some WiFi phone thinking your the man/women because that wont work here… oh and it takes C&W a few weeks to install internet so be warned…
Now the tech part comes in:
Two scenarios:
1. you got ACT and have a working wall jack (ethernet)
- follow the directions on how to connect your wireless router and vonage phone adaptor that came with your devices.
- Connect to your wireless router its probably going to be the default name MOTO (something something) or Linksys (something something)
- now click your internet browser (explore, firefox, safari, opera….)
- the ACT sign in page will come up sign in- dont X out the little box that appears- give it a few minutes and your phone should start working
——————————————————————–
2. you got C&W (good choice…lol)
- you still follow the directions detailed in your vonage user guide
- now instead of signing on to ACT you will need your Password (given to you by your C&W installer) and Username (also given by your installer)
- you connect your computer to your vonage router- you access its home page (normally its http://192.168.5 <– last number is probably different but you can find this in your vonage user guide)
- once there you will be prompted with a sign in (type in: admin for the username/password, or type in router for username/password)
- you are in- now click on the tab called SETUP- there click PPPoE- now put in your username/password given by C&W
- save and bam
- give it a few moment and your phone should now be working
if not you can call me (847)874-7744 or my antigan line 786-1157 and we’ll figure something out.
